✨ About Thula Snana Begins (Tula Sankramana)

"

Thula Snana (also known as Tula Snana or Kaveri Snana) begins on Tula Sankramana and is the sacred practice of taking holy baths in the sacred River Kaveri during the entire solar month of Tula (mid-October to mid-November). Significance of Thula Snana: According to the Skanda Purana (Agastya Samhita & Kaveri Mahatmya) and Agni Purana, Lord Shiva granted a divine boon to River Kaveri that during the entire month when the Sun (Surya) transits through Tula Rashi (Libra), Mother Ganga (Bhagirathi) and all the 66 crore (330 million) sacred theerthas in the universe converge into River Kaveri to cleanse the sins deposited in them throughout the year. Hence, taking a holy dip in River Kaveri during Thula Maasa is considered even more meritorious than thousands of Ganga Snanas, bestowing purification from severe sins, good health, peace, and spiritual liberation (Moksha). Tula Sankramana & Kaveri Theerthodbhava: The sacred observance begins on Tula Sankramana (usually October 17 or 18). At Talakaveri in the Brahmagiri hills of Kodagu (Coorg), Karnataka—the birthplace of River Kaveri—the divine phenomenon of Kaveri Theerthodbhava takes place at the exact auspicious astrological moment when the Sun enters Tula Rashi. Holy water bubbles up and overflows from the sacred Brahma Kundike, witnessed by thousands of devotees. Pilgrims take holy dips at the Triveni Sangama in Bhagamandala and at Talakaveri, collecting the sanctified water to preserve in their homes. Key Observance Days during Thula Maasa: 1. Tula Sankramana (Theerthodbhava Day): The grand beginning of Thula Snana. 2. Tula Amavasya (Deepavali Amavasya): Taking a holy dip in Kaveri on this day is especially sacred for offering Pitru Tarpana, freeing ancestral souls from distress and securing their blessings. 3. Kadaimugam (The Final Day of Tula): Celebrated with immense grandeur at Mayiladuthurai (Mayuram) and across the Kaveri basin as the sacred conclusion of the holy month. Prominent Kshetras for Thula Snana: Talakaveri and Bhagamandala (Kodagu, Karnataka), Srirangapatna (Pashchima Vahini Kaveri, Karnataka), Talakadu and Shivanasamudra (Karnataka), Mayiladuthurai (Mayuranathar Temple Ghats, Tamil Nadu), Tiruchirappalli and Srirangam (Amma Mandapam Ghat, Tamil Nadu), Kumbakonam and Poompuhar (Sagara Sangama, Tamil Nadu). How to Perform Thula Snana: 1. Early Morning Bath: Wake up during Brahmi Muhurtha or before sunrise. If near River Kaveri, bathe directly in the sacred river. If at home, take bath invoking Mother Kaveri and Ganga into the water. 2. Sankalpa: Chant mentally or verbally: 'Tulaam gate divakaraye gangadi sarva theerthani samagacchanti jahnavi, Kaveryam thula snanam karishye mama sarva papa kshayartham shri parameshwara/shri hari preetyartham'. 3. Kaveri Prarthana: 'Gange cha Yamune chaiva Godavari Saraswati, Narmade Sindhu Kaveri jalesmin sannidhim kuru'. 4. Surya Arghya & Pitru Tarpana: Offer Arghya to Surya Deva with the Gayatri Mantra and offer Thila Tarpana to ancestors. 5. Daana (Charity): Giving charity of food (Annadana), oil lamps (Deepadana), and clothes (Vastradana) during this month brings inexhaustible spiritual merit (Akshaya Punya).
